Title
Early Medieval Cruciform Brooch from Rudston
Description
English: Copper alloy and iron

Brooch. Cruciform Brooch. Cast brooch with integral hollow-backed and deeply grooved top knob surmounting a sub-rectangular head plate. A sharply angled concavo-convex curving bow bears pairs of double transverse mouldings at top and bottom, with a casting flaw at its lower end. The brooch then tapers with a further pair of transverse mouldings above a horse head terminal with prominent eyes and small comma shaped curls at the nostrils, the head being hollow behind. A folded catch plate, possibly a repair, is set behind the lower straight part of the brooch. The corroded stub of an iron pin is retained by a U shaped lug behind the head plate.

The integrally cast half-round (actually less as it is concave behind) top knob does not appear to have been accompanied by side knobs to the head plate, and the casting achieved further economy by its resort to a concavo-convex form. The horse head foot is relatively naturalistic, perhaps an early trait carried over into a probably insular copy. The head plate sides are worn, with the complete erosion of one corner, and a possible repair to the fastening gear may also indicate a long period of use. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-550.

Length: 97.1mm, Width: 31.1mm, Thickness (at bow): 1.6mm, Weight: 36.96gms.
