Title
Early Medieval copper alloy hair pin
Description
English: Early medieval copper alloy pin, 38mm long, 15mm wide and 3.5mm thick. It is in fair condition with a weight of 4.09grams. The object consists of a plate of metal which has been rolled to form a circular sectioned shaft. At the top of the shaft the metal has been split into two strips which have been rolled to form two spirals. These then meet creating a 'love heart' shaped terminal with a void below the spirals.

Pins like this are rare. Helen Geake has identified this as a Ross type LXVI. These do not begin before the seventh century. They continue into the late Anglo-Saxon period (up to 1100), but if this find is from a grave it would have been deposited before 720. The object could be a grave find, as many other objects associated with burials have been found close by and objects such as LEIC-6F3475 (tweezers) could also date to this period.
