Title
Early-Medieval ear-scoop
Description
English: An Early-Medieval copper-alloy ear-scoop.

The exact means of construction of this piece is uncertain, but it would appear than the lower half of the shaft has been cast as a solid piece, while the upper portion has been formed by folding inwards the two sides of an integrally cast sheet. No such folding has taken place at the loop, which has a horizontal top, converging sides and a single circular perforation. The upper surface of the head also bears a number of transverse grooves, and these continue into the rectangular-sectioned shaft. The basal scoop has been crudely formed by squashing the end of the shaft and 'pecking' the upper surface with a narrow-bladed implement, several scars from which are visible. The artefact is bent and corroded.

Dimensions: 51.6mm long, up to 7.4mm wide (loop), 2.1mm thick. Weight: 1.92g.

Several similar ear-scoops are held within the Ashmolean Museum's collection (see Macgregor and Bolick 1993: 216-220). Such implements appear to date from the early Anglo-Saxon period.
