The donkey riding trail was foundet as a tourist attraction in 1900, but before the water pipe was made, donkeys bring all of the goods like drinking water, foodstuffs, firewood and building materials in to the Wartburg palace. Die Wartburgesel wurden seit 1900 für Turisten angeschafft. Bis zum Bau der Wartburg-Wasserleitung wurden (fast) alle Lebensmittel, Brennstoffe, Trinkwasser und die Baumaterialien mit Eseln auf die Burg befördert.
