English: Seeing Crop Stress From Space
Nearly one-quarter of the contiguous U.S. was in a moderate-to-severe drought by the end of 2016. Fortunately, NOAA was already enhancing its drought forecasts thanks to a joint Applied Sciences project that integrated data from NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites to create a tool called the Evaporative Stress Index (ESI). ESI helps the agriculture community detect hidden plant stress, caused by dryness and high temperatures. In fact, ESI can predict droughts and flash droughts as much as 2-to-4 weeks earlier than other drought indicators. Read more: appliedsciences.nasa.gov/content/seeing-stress-space-us-p... NASA Earth Science’s Applied Sciences Program promotes efforts to discover and demonstrate innovative and practical uses of Earth science data and knowledge. We support applied research and applications projects that enable ways for organizations to apply data from Earth-observing environmental satellites to inform their decisions and actions. Seeing Stress from Space is just one of many project highlights in the 2016 Applied Sciences Annual Report now available here: appliedsciences.nasa.gov/ |
