Drawing on agar plate with E. coli bacteria

Summary[edit]

Description
English: This is a photo of an agar plate with different strains of E. coli bacteria grown on it. Each strain was genetically engineered to have a certain color: teal, pink or yellow. When bacteria were originally placed on the agar surface, the drawn pattern was not visible. However, after several hours of incubation at 37 degrees Celsius, bacterial colonies grew in size so much that became visible to a naked eye and the pattern of polar bear under starry sky became apparent. Drawing is based on design of the wrapper for Russian chocolate named "Bear on the North" (in Russian "Мишка на Севере").
