Description

A U.S. Navy Grumman E-2A Hawkeye (BuNo 151715) of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 116 "Sun Kings" landing aboard the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea (CVA-43). VAW-116 was assigned to Carrier Air Wing 15 (CVW-15) aboard the Coral Sea for a deployment to the Vietnam from 26 July 1967 to 8 April 1968.
Note the Douglas A-1H Skyraider (BuNo 139734) of Attack Squadron 25 "Fist of the Fleet" in the foreground. The squadron made the last combat deployment of the A-1 attack variant. 139724 was transferred to the U.S. Air Force and served with the 1st Special Operations Squadron, 56th Special Operations Wing. It was shot down by small arms fire 35 km west of Khe Sanh over the Savannakhet Province, Laos, on 6 March 1971. The pilot bailed out and

was rescued by a USAF helicopter.
