Title
English: Duwamish Head, April 1902
Description
English:

On verso of image: April 1902, King Co., West Seattle waterfront

  • Subjects (LCTGM): Piers & wharves--Washington (State)--Seattle
  • Subjects (LCSH): Duwamish Head (Wash.); Elliott Bay (Wash.); West Seattle (Seattle, Wash.); Capes (Coasts)--Washington (State)--Seattle; Waterfronts--Washington (State)--Seattle

The last building here appears to be Seattle Yacht Club (on the West Seattle shore of Elliott Bay 1892-1918) with its lookout tower; but that is hard to reconcile with the lay of the land. If it was the yacht club, the the building must later have been moved, since the 1912 Baist map of Seattle shows it on the south edge of Seacrest Park, roughly where the Water Taxi from Downtown Seattle lands today.

By correspondence, Paul Dorpat says, "This looks north up (and above) Harbor Ave. with the two humps of Magnolia showing. The long dock at the center was for the ferries to Seattle. The filing [?] to the left of this dock and on west side of Harbor Ave. was the headquarters for the trolley line that took the trolley passengers up to the top of Duwamish Head. The westbound cable line that climbs the head is hidden in the green belt to the left. The southeast-bound return on California Way SW [Ferry Ave., at the time] has noticeably cleared its grade above and to the left of the trolley headquarters noted above."
