Description
English: Plumes of tan dust streamed off the coast of Mauritania and over the Atlantic Ocean in early February 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on February 1.

Much of the dust likely arose inland, from the Saharan Desert, but some may arise from arid areas near the coast both in Western Sahara (north) and Mauritania (south).

Africa is the world’s largest source of dust to the atmosphere, contributing about 70 percent of the global total. Airborne mineral dust from the world’s deserts delivers nutrients to the land and ocean and affects the atmosphere and climate.
