The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASAs Terra satellite captured a true-color image of the dusty event on February 27.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Dust continued to pour across from West Africa and over the Atlantic Ocean in late February, 2015. On February 26, vast amounts of dust rose from Senegal, Mauritania and Gambia, and then started on a sweeping trans-Atlantic journey.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASAs Terra satellite captured a true-color image of the dusty event on February 27. At that time, the heaviest dust was passing over the Cape Verde Islands. The tall volcanic peaks on the islands created turbulence in the air as it blew westward. Because the air was so filled with dust, the wakes created by this turbulence can be easily viewed.

A notable feature of this storm is the semi-circular pattern of the leading edge of the dust, which is repeated in the clouds to the west. A broad area of clear, dry air can be seen between the clouds and dust. This pattern was likely caused by air advecting from the North African desert; a front of dry air in a high-pressure weather system preventing cloud formation just ahead of the dust.
