The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the dust storm triggered by the strong winds on that same day.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: A cold front brought strong winds, showers, and cold temperatures across much of northern and northwestern Mexico on January 11, 2024. Gusting winds of over 62 mph (100 km/h) were reported in parts of the region, with gusts of at least 47 mph (76 km/h) in Cuidad Juarez, Mexico. Located close to Juarez, El Paso, Texas recorded gusts of 37 mph (59.5 km/h). The winds tore the roof off of an apartment complex in northeast El Paso, damaging 12 apartments, according to news reports.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the dust storm triggered by the strong winds on that same day.

The image captures tan dust blowing from the Chihuahuan Desert toward the northeast, covering parts of northeastern Mexico, western Texas, and southeastern New Mexico. Cuidad Juarez and El Paso are located near the center of the storm, on the edge of a narrow bank of white clouds. The moving dust is so thick that the ground below is obscured from view.
