Description

14 x 14 magic square celebrating the 500th anniversary of Melencolia I. The square begins with Durer's date of birth (1471) and ends with his date with death (1528). The square is to be visualized as a water retaining surface. The value in each cell specifies the height of the cell. The ponds give the 1514 - 2014 dates. Water dripped into the cell with value 75 will commute through the square filling all ponds to capacity. The water will spill off the square at the cell with value 15. When filled to capacity this square retains 2014 units of water.

  • this is a hybrid structure where the human designs and supplies about half of the values for the square as a template. The CompleteSquare utility then fills out the template and makes the square magic.
  • in this example all values < 97 are supplied. This makes the structure self retaining for the ponds and self draining for the square.
