Object history "peint à Vienne par Joseph Ducreux, après le 20 mai 1769 ; le pastel est rapporté par l'artiste à Versailles qui le remet à choiseul, 8 décembre 1769 ; sans doute faut-il y reconnaître l'un des deux portraits au pastel représentant deux frères de l'empereur dans leur jeunesse cités dans le cabinet de la vaisselle d'or, 1er janvier 1791 ; vraisemblablement saisies révolutionnaires à Versailles ; entré au Louvre à une date indéterminée ; inscrit sur les inventaires du Louvre ; envoi au Château de Versailles, avant 1855"
