Description

This is the summit of the Drumochter Pass. The pass has been in use since prehistoric times and today carries the A9, a railway and, of course, the cycle path.

The railway is the highest stretch of railway in the country and in times past it required two engines to haul the trains to the top of the pass. Passengers would often opt to get out and walk to the summit such was the speed of the train ! The ones we saw were all going downhill so I didn't see how modern trains handle the route.

This is possibly the windiest place on earth and it's quite often closed altogether in winter by snowstorms.
