Description

St. Peter's Church (Church of Ireland), Peter's Hill, Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland

English: Robinson stone and brass in memory of Richard Robinson D.D., Archbishop of Armagh, located in the north wall of the north aisle among other memorial plates of the Robinson family. These items were moved from the Robinson estate at Marlay to St. Peter's in 1909. The arms display those of the archdiocese of Armagh impaling the arms of Robinson using the motto Non nobis solum sed toti mundo nat. Blazon of the Archbishopric of Armagh: Azure, an episcopal staff ensigned with a cross patée or, surmounted by a pall argent, edged and fringed gold, charged with four crosses formée-fitchée sable. (Quoted from Public Arms by Fox-Davies, p. 32.) Blazon for the arms of Robinson: Vert on a chevron or, between three bucks trippant of the last and pellettée as many quatrefoils gules. Crest: a buck, as in the arms. Supporters: On either side a buck proper ducally gorged and chained or, charged on the the shoulder with a quatrefoil. (Quote from Séamus Bellew, p. 403, see below, which in turn was cited from Burke's General Armory, see p. 861.) Inscription of the brass plate:

On the above stone is carved the coat of arms of the Most Reverend
RICHARD ROBINSON, D.D., Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland,
Baron Rokeby of Armagh, and First Prelate of the Order of Saint Patrick.
He died in his 86th year on the 10th of October 1794 and his remains were interred in the Chancel Vault
beneath his Cathedral of Armagh. He was a munificent benefactor to the City and Diocese of Armagh,
and endowed the Public Library and Observatory of Armagh.

The inscription is also fully cited in Séamus Bellew, Drogheda Churches: Heraldry and Memorial Inscriptions. Journal of the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society, vol. 26, no. 3, 2007, pp. 386–403, JSTOR 27730002.
