Title
dress pin
Description
English: Description: A complete silver pin most likely to be early post medieval and circa 16th century in date. This pin consists of circular head, which has a flat back face and a domed front face, and separate shaft.

The head measures 11.15mm in diameter and is 5.42mm in thickness, it has a separate flat back plate and is gilded on both faces. The front domed face is decorated with three main filigree circles with a silver knop in their centre. Each of the main filigree circles has five smaller filigree circles within it with another central silver knop at their centre. There are further filigree circles and knops between each of the main circles and around the base of the face.

The shaft is circular in cross-section and tapers to a point; it measures 53.05mm in length and 2.43mm in width. The shaft is soldered to the back face of the head; at this point it is flattened and runs up the centre of the head.

Dimensions:

Weight: 3.75g

Length: 55.87mm

Width: 11.15mm

Discussion: No exact parallel could be found for this pin, however, there is another Suffolk example of similar construction but with moulded rather than filigree decoration. The style and similarities of the decoration to the more common spherically headed dress pins see Hacheston, Suffolk (2002T240) (Treasure Annual Report 2002 147) for example, suggests that it is most likely to be early post medieval circa 16th century in date.
