English: Design for a painted ceiling, viewed directly from below. The central circular decoration shows Aurora (a winged figure riding in a chariot pulled by two horses; a putto with a burning torch flies in front of her). The scene is placed within a tromp l'oeil architectural framework. At each corner, an illusionary lunette with a pointed arch contains a bust on a pedestal: Orpheus for Music, Homer for Poetry, Apelles for Painting, and Vitruvius for Architecture. |
