Description
English: NASA's Aqua satellite passed over the Western United States and spotted plumes of smoke from the Draw, Rooster's Comb, and Antelope fires as they burned in early July 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image at 2030 UTC (4:30 p.m. EDT) on July 10.

The Rooster's Comb Fire is in Nevada and can be seen near the center of the image. Red hot spots at this fire surround a blackened burn scar and a large plume of gray smoke rises and blows to the northeast. Red hot spots mark areas of high temperature and, when accompanied by typical smoke, is indicative of actively burning fire. The Draw Fire (sometimes called the Drew Fire) burns in the southwestern section of Nevada. It is difficult to see in this image, as it sits on the bottom left edge. In the north, in south central Idaho, a plume of smoke rises from the red hot spot marking the Antelope Fire.

The Rooster's Comb Fire was first noticed on July 9 and is burning about 25 miles north of Battle Mountain, Nevada. As of July 11, it had consumed about 25,000 acres and was only 15% contained. It was burning through grass, sage brush, and pinyon juniper. Inciweb Incident Information System reported that strong winds had been pushing the fire east and threatening ranches, mining, power station infrastructure, and sage grouse habitat.

The Draw Fire ignited on the morning of July 7 approximately 50 miles east of Fallon, Nevada. As of 6:00 p.m. on July 11, the fire had burned 25,249 acres and was 40% contained, according to Inciweb. The flames have been exhibiting active running, spotting, and torching fire behavior, with wind gusts of up to 35 mph (56 km/h) increasing the rate of spread on July 11.

The Antelope Fire is burning 4 miles west of Shoshone, Idaho just south of Interstate 84. As of July 11, this fire had covered 29,500 acres according to Wildfire Today. They also report that the fire was exhibiting extreme fire behavior with wind-driven runs.

The Antelope Fire was reportedly caused by lightning, while the cause of the Draw Fire and the Rooster Comb are currently reported as unknown.
