Dr Laws on the Ulendo River, Malawi, ca. 1895-ca.1910
Photograph of Dr Robert Laws, the Scottish missionary, with a group of African men transporting loads across the Ulendo River. The river is fast flowing and a make shift bridge has been built with logs and branches across large rocks in the middle of the river. Some men are crossing the bridge and others are standing on rocks on the river bank.; This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
