Its internal administration and local application have been recommended incancer of the breast, but respecting the benefits obtained from this method of treat-ment there is considerable diversity of opinion. It is said to relieve pain andimprove the general health, and in some cases such beneficial effects have followedits use that a projected operation has been abandoned. In cancer of the womb it hasproved useless. It should be borne in mind that even if no benefit is obtainedfrom its use, it cannot possibly do any harm. The tincture should be given in dropdoses every hour. It often does good in piles, and then the internal administrationshould be combined with the use of the lotion (Pr. 96), applied freely on lint, andrenewed frequently. INDIAN HEMP. The Indian hemp (Cannabis indica) is essentially the same as that so largely cul-tivated for the sake of its fibre. It was at one time supposed that there were two

The hemp came to usoriginally from Persia, although it is stated to be a native of India, but, like thetobacco and the potato, it has a wonderful power of adapting itself to exigencies ofsoil and climate, and is now widely distributed over the surface of the globe. Thesap contains a peculiar resinous substance in which the esteemed narcotic virtueresides. In northern countries the proportion of this resin is so small as to haveescaped general observation, but in the warmer regions of the East it exudesnaturally and in considerable quantities from every part of the plant In CentralIndia it is collected during the hot season by men clad in leathern dresses, whotun through the hemp fields brushing violently against the plants.
