Burns a?id Scalds.—Bums are probably not quite so frequent as scalds, but aremuch more alarming at the time of theiroccurrence, and, if severe, are much moreserious in their results than scalds. Theslightest form of burn, viz., a superficialburn or scorch, merely reddening withoutdestroying the skin, may be produced by aslight explosion of gas, or the ignition ofsome article of clothing which has beenrapidly extinguished. Here the pain issevere for the moment, but rapidly subsidesas soon as the surface burnt is protected.This can be readily effected by dredgingflour over the part, and wrapping it up incotton wadding, or, should the part burntbe one not readily covered in this way,e.g., the face, by painting it over with amixture of equal parts of collodion andcastor oil, or with a solution of nitrate ofsilver, such as the nitrate-bath of pho
