the skin hard is an excellent tonic, and is useful for therelief of many of the local conditions of discomfort, pain, and distress, for which the patient most frequentlyapplies to the physician. In many chest affections,especially bronchitis andinflammation of the lungs, it is desirable to keep the airof the room moist. An ordinary kettle placed on thefire may accomplish this purpose, but often the draughtup the chimney carries all the vapour with it. A pieceof tin tubing fixed on to the spout, so as to projectbeyond the fireplace, will obviate this difficulty. SomeFig. 7.-bhoxc^is kettle. Pe0Ple use a Pouchitis kettle, in which a long spoutis fixed into tue lid. Its shape will be seen in theaccompanying figure. It might be knocked together by any tinman for a fewshillings, or the lid and spout might be fitted to any kettle in ordinary use. Sieglessteam spray apparatus (Fig. 2) is useful for moistening the air of the room, andhas this advantage, that it may be placed near the bedside.

In this diseasethe substance of the lung itself is in a state of inflammation ; in bronchitis it is theair passages that are inflamed; whilst in pleurisy the inflammation attacks thepleura or membrane covering the lung. In acute pneumonia the fever runs as high,and the whole course of the disease is as abrupt as in many of the eruptive fevers.As a rule pneumonia attacks only one lung, the lower part or base being primarilyinvolved. Occasionally there is inflammation of both lungs, and then we speak ofit as being a case of double pneumonia. When pleurisy and pneumonia co-exist, asthey often do, the complaint is known as pleuro-pneumonia, A consideration of the causes of pneumonia may help to throw some light uponits nature and the place it should occupy in the classification of diseases.
