[edit]DescriptionDr. George B. Snow House, Buffalo, New York - 20220319.jpg |
English: The Dr. George B. Snow House, 109 Plymouth Avenue, Buffalo, New York, March 2022. Built in 1882 and serving as a contributing property to the NRHO-listed Fargo Estate Historic District, the Queen Anne style furnished by its architect, the locally-based William Hart Boughton, is still plenty in evidence despite the fairly drastic series updates and modernizations that house has undergone over the years. To wit, the brick veneer on the ground floor of the façade likely dates to the early 20th century (the diamond-shaped pattern in the masonry was a common decorative trend in c. the 1920s), while the vinyl siding on the second floor and the sides of the building is of downright contemporary vintage. However, a modicum of original detailing does remain in the guise of the decorative brackets and vergeboard on the front gable and the fishscale singles that decorate various elements of the façade. Apparently a speculative venture on the part of its builder, the house was advertised extensively for sale over the first year of its existence; the eventual purchaser was Dr. George Burwell Snow (1835-1923), who during his four years at 109 Plymouth was "merely" the president of the Buffalo Dental Manufacturing Company, but who would later rise to national fame as a founder of the University of Buffalo Dental School, as the inventor of various dental apparatus, and, interestingly, also for his personal library of volumes pertaining to American history and genealogy, which he donated to the Los Angeles chapter of the Sons of the Revolution after his death. Dr. Snow moved out in 1887, and the house was sold and resold repeatedly over the ensuing decade or so. |
