Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Dr. Clarence P. Kummer House, 89 Huntley Road, Buffalo, New York, January 2022. Centrally located within the Treehaven or Judges' Row neighborhood in the city's far northeast corner, this two-and-a-half-story residence was built in 1928 for a cost of $10,000. Its architecture is best described as a simplified version of the Mediterranean Revival aesthetic that was popular in the era among middle- and upper-class homes: the warm colors, symmetrical façade, widely overhanging hipped tile roof, and overall sprawling massing are all evident here even if the ornamentation is relatively bereft of the ornate cut-stone detailing and the only arch to be found is on the second-floor window atop the entrance vestibule (note also the wrought-iron rail surrounding the balconet; a neat touch). This was the longtime home of Dr. Clarence Perry Kummer (1894-1946), a well-respected cardiologist whose private practice was on Bailey Avenue but who also served with the 232rd General Hospital in the Pacific Theater of World War II, which saw service on Iwo Jima among other places. Dr. Kummer lived in the house until his ultimately death (ironically, of a heart attack), and his widow Lilah remained there until her move to the nearby suburb of Amherst in 1950.
