Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Doyle-Wetzel House, 92 Fairfield Street, Buffalo, New York, March 2021. Built in 1909, the design of the house would be best classified as Queen Anne, though the steeply pitched hip roof and boxy appearance of the façade differentiate it considerably from the more standard examples of the style to be found in this section of Buffalo. One requisite element that is indeed present is the corner tower, octagonal and topped consecutively with a tent roof and an elegant pinnacle. The front porch is full-width and sports restrained Classical detailing, most prominently in the wooden support posts which are fashioned into Doric pillars. There is some relatively spiffy ironwork to be seen on the rails of the front steps, as well. The house was built for the Doyle family: matriarch Margaret (1835-1928), the widow of former tugboat captain and Buffalo harbormaster James Doyle (1834-1904); her youngest son James R. Doyle (1873-1912), the well-known and well-liked local billiard impresario who managed the parlors at the Hotel Iroquois and later the Court Inn; and the two young orphaned children of Margaret's late son William (1863-1895). After James R.'s death, the house was sold to Anthony G. Wetzel (1858-1929), a self-employed house painter and paper hanger who was previously a longtime resident of Williamsville. He and his son Anthony L. (1883-1965) - who initially followed his father into the painting business, but later took up interior decorating as well - lived in the house until their respective deaths.
