Dit is de 2e Uiver, een replica van de Uiver uit 1934. De 1e Uiver (in 1934 beroemd geworden tijdens de luchtrace Londen-Melbourne met gezagvoer captain Parmentier) was op 20 december 1934 voor de tweede keer op weg naar Batavia. Het was een extra vlucht vanwege de kerst en er was 350 kg post aan boord. Na een tussenstop in Caïro wilde gezagvoerder Wim Beekman niet vertrekken wegens de slechte weersomstandigheden, maar KLM-directeur Albert Plesman dreigde hem te ontslaan. Dus vertrok de Uiver, maar hij zou nooit in Bagdad aankomen. Door slecht weer verongelukte hij bij Rutbah Wells in het Irakese deel van de Syrische woestijn. De vier bemanningsleden en de drie passagiers kwamen om. Foto genomen op een luchtshow op Vliegbasis Volkel. |
