Dos de Mayo – Madrid, Jacinto Ruiz memorial, statue

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Jacinto Ruiz y Mendoza (1779 - 1809) is most famous for his action at the Parque de Artillería de Monteleón, focal point of the Dos-de-Mayo [1808] Uprising against the napoléonic occupation of Spain.

Lieutenant Jacinto Ruiz took over the command once Captain Pedro Velarde was killed and Captain Luis Daoíz mortally wounded.  Severely wounded himself, he was evacuated and eventually translated all the way to Badajoz, a safer place to avoid being captured by the enemy.
Raised to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel for his bravery, he never recovered and died on March 13, 1809.

The idea of raising the monument in his memory arose in 1888.  The sculpture was entrusted to Mariano Benlliure (1862-1947), who first presented a model in plaster at the National Exhibition of 1890.  Cast in bronze at Rome in 1891, the statue was shipped to Madrid, erected on a marble socle, Plaza del Rey, and inaugurated by Doña María Cristina, Regent of Spain, on May 5, 1891.
At the back of the socle, a plaque : "El Ejercito Español A Uno De Sus Heroes // II de Mayo MDCCCXCI".
On both the left and right sides of the socle : bas-reliefs depicting Lieutenant Jacinto Ruiz in full action, and being abducted wounded from the battlefield.
At each corner of the plinthe, coats of Arms : "Patriotismo", "Fortaleza", Lealtad", "Abnegación".
