DONTZETTI work of Donizetti. At first it was not a success,and it was not until after its German and Italiantriumphs that French opera-goers took to the work.At the beginning of the opera Marie is a beauti-ful girl of seventeen, who had been found on thebattlefield as an infant, and brought up by Sulpizioas the daughter of the regiment. Marie is lovedby Tonio, a young peasant, who had saved her life 84 Up to 1840 Donizetti had written no less than fifty-threeoperas, and during that year five new ones were created byhim. His Daughter ofthe Regiment is a bril-liant little opera, withits rollicking songs, itsdrums, its vivaciousheroine and its comicold Corporal. Fewworks are so rich inmelody or possess amore entertaining plot,which tells of the Ty-rolese peasant Tony,who enters a regimentto win the heart of itsvivandiere, or daughter. The young girl returns his affection,and they decide to appeal to Sulpizio. In asking for Maries hand in marriage Tonio ssuit is brought before the regiment, which de-cides that he may have the Vivandiere providinghe joins the army, which he promptly does.Sulpizio meets the Marchioness of Berfcenfield andgives her a letter which he had found addressedto her at the time the baby Marie was found onthe battlefield. The Marchioness, who had married a Frencharmy captain far beneath her own rank, imme-diately recognizes the young girl as her daugh-ter. The marriage had been a secret one andthe child was confided to her fathers care at herbirth. Not wishing to acknowledge this marriageeven now, the Marchioness declares Marie to beher niece, and dismisses Tonio as a totally unfitperson to wed a high-born maiden.
