English: Disused railway tunnel, Scotswood The railway line was built for the Scotswood, Newburn & Wylam Railway which linked with the existing Newcastle to Carlisle Railway (N&CR) at each end. The tunnel is just west of the former Scotswood Station where the N&CR line crossed the River Tyne prior to 1982 NZ1963 : Scotswood Railway Bridge. Construction of the line between Scotswood and Newburn was started in 1872 and completed in July 1875, with the extension to Wylam being opened as a single line in 1876 with a second track laid later the same year. The west end of the tunnel is just west of Denton Road. |
