At the root of theneck the vago-sympathetic ends in a large ganglion, the i7iferior cervical ganglion, from which severalsmall branches are given off, passing toward the heartand entering the cardiac plexus. hX. the ganglionthe two nerves separate as shown in Fig. 6. 17. The Thoracic Vagus continues posteriorly fromthe ganglion, giving off also some small branches tojoin the cardiac plexus. Near the base of the heart itgives off a large branch, the recttrrent or inferior laryn-geal, which on the left side curves round the aorta andpasses anteriorly along the side of the trachea in theneck, where it can easily be found and followed to itstermination in the larynx, to the muscles of which itgives motor fibres. DISSECTION OF THE NECK. 69 this nerve curves round the sub-clavian artery, andthen continues forward into the neck as described. After giving off other branches to the lungs, thevagus descends along the oesophagus, and finallydivides into two branches, one of which passes to thedorsal side of the oesophagus, and is there joined by asimilar branch from the right vague ; the other divisionpasses to the ventral side of the oesophagus, where itjoins the similar ventral branch of the right vagus. The two new trunks thus formed can be traced to thestomach ; each ends in a plexus of nerve-fibres, whichare distributed to the stomach and make connectionsalso with the solar plexus of the coeliac ganglia. 18. The Thoracic Sympathetic Trunk. From theinferior cervical ganglion two branches pass to thelarge \st thoracic ganglion, one above and onebelow the sub-clavian artery, f
