which we knewat once to be a volcano. A moment before we had beengazing into empty space, and now here was a mighty mountainmass looming up before us, on the summit of which we almostinvoluntarily looked for snow. This was, however, only theresult of an optical delusion caused by the suddenness withwhich the mountain had come in sight, and from the fact thatthe land sank rapidly on either side of it whilst we weregazing up at it from a considerable height. On the east of themountain the land was uniformly flat, a golden plain lit upby sunshine, wdiilst on the east the base of the volcano seemedto rise up out of a bottomless depth, a void which wasaltogether a mystery to us. We hurried as fast as we couldto the top of our ridge, the scene gradually developing itselfas we advanced, until an entirely new world was spread outbefore our astonished eyes.
