Summary[edit]

Description

Online Masters grad course running in Fall 2012. First introductory podcast was recorded by Maureen Connolly & Tom Craig this morning. These are a few of my notes.

The core objective of the course is to consider what assumptions, values, stereotypes, expectations and stigmas are built into our language. What kind of labels do we inherently bring with our perspectives.

There is always a tendancy to shift into binaries of us and them. Who are "WE" and who are "THEY"?

Referencing the "OTHER" must respect the lived experience. Who decides when and how first person language is more appropriate? i.e. "people with disabilities" or "disabled persons"

Even traffic reports, "disabled car is blocking the highway" or seemingly innocent statements like "that's so lame" are loaded with stigma and assumption. Meaning well is no excuse.

How can we be self-aware and critically look at our assumptions and expectations as professionals, family members, teachers and students.
