the topis surmounted with an open-work cresting decorated withcrystals set en cabochon. The other coffer, which is i8 inches long and 14 incheshigh, is also of copper and decorated like the last, but it appearsto have been executed some few years earlier. The upper partof the front bears five figures of gilt bronze in high relief on abackground of blue enamel, with engraved foliage and flowersenamelled in colours. The figures comprise the saint on herknees by the executioner, the consul who ordered the martyr-dom, and SS. Mary and John below. On the back of thecasket are six large medallions, each containing an angel withoutspread wings on a red enamelled background, the copperround each being gilt and repousse ; and the two ends of thecasket have each a saint engraved on an enamelled background. There is also another very fine example of twelfth-centurywork in copper, engraved and enamelled, in the Hotel Cluny, butwhence it was derived seems unknown. It is \()\ inches long. ^^ i^-.,

Plate XIITHE SHKIXE OF S. SEBALD SHRINES 113 and nearly 12 inches high, and is decorated with subjectsrelating to Christ which are engraved upon the copper,with the heads sculptured in high relief and the backgroundenamelled. In France, however, there are still a few of these coffersremaining in the churches to which they belonged before theRevolution, belonging to the early part of the thirteenthcentury. The best known of these is in the Church of S.Taurin at Evreux, and is formed in imitation of a contemporarychurch, with transepts, buttresses and spire, and is decorated inblue, red, yellow, green and white enamels. A second one isto be found in the Church of S. Jule at Jouarre, which has anarcade of six trefoiled arches on each side, once filled withfigures which have been stolen, but their names are engravedbeneath the spaces ; and on the cover are six scenes in relieffrom the life of S.
