Stacking fault and its formation in a FCC lattice

Summary[edit]

Description

English: Left - Glide mechanisms for a total edge dislocation on a {111} plane in <-110> direction.

The dislocation (its line is located precisely on the plane of dashed atoms, and the extra half-plane extends in the entering direction) can force the blue atoms to move by a single jump or by two easier shifts along the valleys in the underlying atomic layer (the two possibilities are highlighted in red and orange, respectively). Right - Stacking fault limited by two partial dislocations.

If the glide happens according to the second manner, at the end of the first jump the shifted atoms find themselves in an irregular position within the green region, which therefore represents the stacking fault area, limited by two partial dislocations.
