Summary[edit]

Description

The indicator states Linie 2 , Hauptbahnhof. But there was only one clockwise route which always started and finished at the main station. the reason for this was that Linie 2 was a clockwise route, Linie 1 its anti-clockwise conterpart. (there were crossing loops). However, between Jan 1986 and June 1987 the system was closed for urgent renovation, and when it reopened using trailers (as in the picture) a steep hill,Moritzburg, in the anti-clockwise direction meant that 2 car sets were unable to climb the hill, so only route 2 was re-introduced.

Tram no 31 had a varied career , starting with Halle, passing to Plauen as no 91, before arriving in Naumburg in 1988 along with Plauen nr 88 (Naumburg 32) . They were Gotha T59E vehicles, and were both scrapped after the end of normal operation on 18 August 1991. At the end , only 31,32 and 41 were the operational motor vehicles. Operations have since started up, initially as a museum operation, but now a daily service. The route is ;no longer a circle, and is known as linie 4, thus can only be operated by double-ended cars. An english summary is found here. There is a healthy society of friends of Naumburg/Jena transport which has been instrumental in retaining the system in the first place. Their site has an overview in German of the tourist sights of the town which is certainly worthy of a visit.
