Summary[edit]
DescriptionDickinsonia new NT.jpg |
English: Life restoration of Dickinsonia costata, a mysterious organism from the Ediacaran biota which has been found in South Australia, Russia, and Ukraine. Specimens vary in length from a few millimeters to over a meter. Dickinsonia is believed by most to be a soft-bodied animal, but its relationship with other animals is debated. One suggestion is that it and similar segmented Ediacaran animals are members of a phylum Proarticulata that was a very early offshoot of the Bilateria (animals with bilateral symmetry). Since trace fossils (Epibaion) have been found associated with Dickinsonia, it is believed to have moved over the sea floor to feed, as depicted here; note the traces on the sediment to the right. |
