rown, who hadbeen specially asked by the Directorate of theUnion Castle Line to look after our well-being ;and we were quickly on very friendly terms, and quite at home in that very comfortable ship. 2 2 Diary of a Tour in South Africa. March 17. This morninof we arrived at Madeira, andanchored off Funchal about 6 a.m. in fog andrain. The general appearance of things wassomewhat similar to Gourock and the Clyde atits very worst, with nothing to be seen butmist and drizzle; so we decided not to goashore, and spent the morning loafing about thedeck watching some boys, of a very depravedlooking type, dive for coins. Two youngscoundrels, one quite an infant, climbed up theships side, right on to the boat deck, fromwhich they dived, fully 40 feet, I imagine. At II A.M. we sailed for Cape Town, andshall probably not see land again for about afortnight. March 18. At 12 oclock to-day we are 1,690 milesfrom Southampton, and our average run forthe twenty-four hours appears to be anything SPORTS.

Diary of a Tour in South Africa. 23 from 360 to 380 miles. At last we have mostbeautiful weather, which is to be expected, asthis evening we shall cross the Tropic of Cancer.To-day we have seen a number of dolphins, and have also noticed flying-fish for the firsttime this voyage. Temperature in cabin stillreasonable: last night, 67°, and this morning, 71°.We have on board some very well-knownpassengers, conspicuous amongst them bemgSir Charles Metcalfe, the designer of thefamous bridge over the Zambesi just belowthe Victoria Falls ; a marvellous constructionof most terrific height that must have beengiddy work for those who built it. He isalso consulting engineer to the railway whichis slowly but none the less surely pushing itsway to the north ; and he is going out nowin connection with another section, which willadvance the railhead a further 150 miles in theCairo direction. There is, also, a very typicalExcellency on board, going out to govern some 24 Diary of a Tour in South Afri
