Deutsch: Wie schnell entsteht aus einem lockeren Sediment ein fester Stein? Sind dazu Monate, wenige Jahre, Jahrhunderte oder sogar Jahrtausende nötig? Das Fundstück hier legt nahe, dass der Prozess zumindest in wenigen Jahrzehnten ablaufen kann. Wikipedia definiert Diagenese wie folgt: Die Diagenese (altgriechisch δια ‚durch‘ und γένεσις ‚Entstehung‘) ist der geologische Prozess der Verfestigung von Sedimenten und der weiteren Veränderung der dadurch entstandenen Sedimentgesteine unter verhältnismäßig niedrigen Drücken und Temperaturen bis zu ihrer Abtragung. Der Stein hier im Bild hat einen genau solchen Prozess in geologisch sehr kurzer Zeit vollzogen: er ist sehr fest, das erkennbare Uhrband lässt sich auch mit großer Kraft nicht bewegen. Lediglich die zwei überstehenden Glieder sind leicht drehbar. Mit dem Fingernagel lassen sich keine Körner aus dem Stein lösen und auch im nassen Zustand färbt er auf starken Abrieb mit den Fingern nicht ab. Erkennbar sind roter Rost, ein Uhrarmband und viele Muschelschalen. Der Stein wog rund 450 Gramm, hatte eine Ausdehnung von rund 84 mal 61 mal 64 Millimetern und ein Volumen (Verdrängungsmessung) von rund 140 Kubikzentimetern. Damit kam er auf eine Dichte von etwa 3,2 g/cm³. Das liegt in der Region von Basalt. Salzsäure erzeugte auf den Muschelteilen eine stark schäumende Reaktion, auf den rötlichen Rostteilen hingegen keinerlei Reaktion. Der Stein wurde im Sandwatt am westlichen Ende der Nordseeinsel Wangerooge gefunden. Der gute Zustand des Armbandes lässt vermuten, dass das ursprüngliche Sediment nur wenige Jahre oder höchstens wenige Jahrzehnte benötigte, um sich stark zu verfestigen.
