Detail of white dove feather - vertical rhachis and gap between barbs - DSG2101-1 - 2021-04-04 (magnification ratio 3x, focus stack, HiRes)

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Macro image of the midsection of a white dove feather. The vertical rhachis (shaft) is the base from which parallel barbs protrude. Two disconnected barbs form a gap, thus displaying two kinds of barbules that hook up to form a perfect vane. The magnification ratio as compared to a full frame sensor is approx.1:3.0, i.e. 3x; the width of the image being approx. 12 mm. A series of images was processed as a HiRes focus stack that resolves both barbs and barbules across the image.

NOTE: This image is a focus stacked image of "Macro image of the midsection of a white dove feather" consisting of 73 images that were merged using Zerene Stacker Version 1.04 Build T2022-04-21-0715 (licensed). As a result, this image underwent digital manipulation which may have included blending, blurring, cloning, and colour and perspective adjustments. As a result of these adjustments, the image content may be slightly different than reality at the points where the images were combined. This manipulation is often required due to lens, perspective, and parallax distortions.

Additional Information[edit]

en: Macro image of the midsection of a white dove feather.

  • The vertical rhachis (shaft) is the base from which parallel barbs protrude.
  • Two disconnected barbs form a gap, thus displaying two kinds of barbules that hook up (as all others in this close-up) to form a perfect vane.
  • The magnification ratio as compared to a full frame sensor is approx. 3.0:1, i.e. 3x; the width of the image being approx. 12 mm.
  • Focus stack derived from 73 images, the lens being attached to a "Novoflex Castel-Micro" focusing rack and automatic stepper, advancing 0.03 mm between images.
  • Very high resolution: barbules all across the image are resolved in fine detail.
  • Feather components: refer to Illustration: components of a feather
  • Image series taken in Aplerbeck, Dortmund, Germany in April 2021.
