Description
English: Detail of font, St Mary's Church, Winterborne Whitechurch Described as "Very odd indeed" by Newman and Pevsner. The font dates from about 1450. This shield, shown as "A chevron between three lions rampant", one of four similar, is blazoned in the church guidebook as "a fess dauncette between three lions rampant" (per: Rochford arms, 'Monumental Heraldry in Dorset', in An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in Dorset, Volume 5, East (London, 1975), pp. 121-129. British History Online http://www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/dorset/vol5/pp121-129) (should be: ) "the arms of the family of Rochford, lords of the manor of Whitechurch". Above is a cornice of grapes and foliage.
