Summary[edit]

Description
English: American paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) fry under the microscope at the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery in Riverdale, North Dakota, in the United States.

When they hatch, paddlefish babies (or "fry") are about the size of a thumbnail, and semi-transparent. This image shows some of the features of the fry. Arrows point to the small bump on the nose that will develop into the paddlefish's rostrum (its elongated bill), the minute eyes, and the small heart (flushed pink with blood).

The "corkscrew" is technically known as the "melamine plug". The plug blocks the digestive tract until the fry is mature enough to digest food. The it is absorbed by the fry at about two to three weeks of age, and disappears.
