Description

This photograph of the shrine to St. Abbo in the Church of Bet Mercurios in Lalibela, Ethiopia, focuses on the painting that is at the heart of the shrine.

According to flickerite PJBayens, who identified this saint for me in a painting several churches ago,

"Saint Gebre Menfes Kidus, more popularly known as Saint Abbo . . . founded the monastery on Mount Zuqwala (various spellings)."

"Like the Western St. Francis, he's portrayed with animals--and clothed in his own body hair. He's featured in one of the stained glass windows in the church of Tekle Haymanot in Debre Libanos."

By now, I have seen enough versions of this painting that I'm familiar with the necessary elements:

St. Abbo stands in the center, dressed in a shaggy garment, holding both hands upright in a supplicating pose, flanked by lions on the left and leopards on the right. Oh, and there's a little bird near one the saint's ears.

This painting differs from the others in several ways:

1. Saint Abbo is actually holding the bird; usually, the bird is seen fluttering free near the Saint's ear.

2. The saint is holding what looks like a Latin cross on a golden chain in his left hand. In another version, St. Abbo is holding an Ethiopian hand cross.

3. There's a small devil holding a trident curled up at St. Abbo's feet, and it looks like the devil's health has taken a turn for the worse.

4. St. Abbo is standing is a splendid landscape, complete with trees, shrubs and hills, and a blue sky with white clouds.

In the lower left corner of the canvas, I think I can make out the date 1961.

According to a post in the blog All Adventure Travel, Ethiopia "still uses the Julian calendar, which has 12 months of 30 days each and an additional month of 5 days, with 6 days in a leap year. "

"Relative to the Gregorian calendar used in the west, Ethiopia is 7 years behind between 11th September and 8th January and 8 years for the rest of the year."

This means the painting was completed either in 1968 or 1969 on the Gregorian calendar used in the West.
