22. III. THE FEW BRIDGE.Art. 2 - Survey of Site. In order to intelligently design a bridge for a certainlocation, it is essential to have at hand a topographical map ofthe territory immediately surrounding the proposed bridge. Since the new bridge will replace the old one, the centerline of the new bridge will coincide with the center line of theroad. Topography was taken with a transit and level rod, using asa base line, the center line of the road, established with respectto the fences. The elevation of the flcor of the old bridge wasarbitrarily taken as 100,.and all other elevations were referredto this. A profile of the center line of the road and the topo-graphic map are shown in Fig. 9 and 10 respectively. Art. 5. Determination of Class of Bridge.
