| Description |
desert onion, Allium atrorubens var. cristatum, Nevada, White Mountains, Queen Valley - Owens Valley watershed, elevation 2583 m (8475 ft). This variety is found in some of the driest habitats of any onion, mostly in rocky and/or clay soils at desert to montane elevations (here near its highest), in limited portions of the southern Great Basin and northern Mojave desert of the southwestern United States. It is very similar to Allium nevadense from farther north and east, distinguished mainly by features of its bulb coat. Here in the White Mountains this is one of only two onion species present, the other being restricted to moist wetland habitats. Also visible is leaf litter of singleleaf pinyon pine (Pinus monophylla). |
