Summary[edit]

Description
English: Denshire Field The name of the field according to the 1842 tithe map. Taken from the footpath that runs along the southern side of the field though is separated by an electric fence which leaves little room for the walker as the nettles and thorns have grown right up beside it. The name probably derives from 'Devonshiring' a local term from the early modern period to the agricultural process of burn-beating taken from the county where it was first revived. Burn-beating was a method of improving the barren clay soils of the Weald by cutting weeds close to the ground then layering with grubbed up roots, covered with soil and burnt (Leaving a vent hole for ventilation). The ashes were then spread over the soil to fertilise it.
