Description

Accoridng to legend Hildward is of Frankish descent. He is supposed to be educated by Bertinus of Toul. After the latter was killed in an ambush King Dagobert III († 715) appointed him bisshop. A local nobleman however wanted his son to have the bishop's throne. Hildward left with two companions, Brinus and Brittinus, to Rome to visit the graves of the apostles and to receive the pope's blessing. The pope convinced him that he was needed in Flanders. In Dikkelvenne (now Geraardsbergen) he founded an abbey and a church.

In 846, during the Norman invasions, the relics of Hildward an Christiana were transferred to Dendermonde. Christiana is the first patron saint of the city, Hildward the second.
