The battalion under Custer himself, containing troops I, Captain Keogh and Lieu-tenant Porter; F, Captain Yates and Lieutenant Reily; C, Captain Tom Custer andLieutenant Harrington; E, Lieutenants Smith and Sturgis; L, Lieutenants Calhounand Crittenden; Dr. Lord as surgeon, and Lieutenant Cook, the regimental adjutant.The pack train, under Lieutenant Mathey, was escorted by Troop B, CaptainMcDougall. Renos advance guard had in the meantime reached a burning tepee, chasingsome Indians who had fired it. In the tepee was the body of a trooper killed inGeneral Crooks battle at the Rosebud. Custer sent an order to Reno to hurry for-ward and charge the village, and the whole force would support him. Renotrotted ahead until he reached the river. Crossing it he sent word to Custer thatthe Indians were in front of him in large numbers. After moving forward abouttwo miles Reno dismounted his men, advancing them as a line of skirmishers, withhis Ree scouts to the left. Two horses ran away with their hapless riders, carryingthem right into the hostiles lines, whence a demoniacal howl arose, leaving nodoubt as to their fate.
