As the forts had in themeantime opened with full force on the Royal Yacht, and Jouetts pilot, who was totake the schooner out, had been shot, the Lieutenant gave up bringing her out, butspiked her only gun and set her on fire, totally destroying her. Lieutenant Jouettand his daring party reached the San tee safely, where they were warmly receivedby their ship-mates, and well did they deserve the praise which Captain McKeanbestowed upon them. Among the men who especially distinguished themselves onthis day was George Bell, captain of the afterguard on the Santee, who steered oneof the boats. While the party was boarding the Royal Yacht he was severelywounded in the encounter, but notwithstanding his suffering from the wound hekept in the fight and otherwise displayed extraordinary courage under the mostpainful and trying circumstances.
