ddenly at breakneck speed, reported the presence of alarge Indian camp only a short distance in front in the breaks. Lieutenant Baldwin,without waiting for re-enforcements, at once closed up his command, preparatory toan attack, and sent Scout Schmalsle to General Miles to notify him that an Indiancamp had been located and an attack would be made upon it immediately, regardlessof the numerically vastly superior Indian forces. After dispatching the scout, Baldwin ordered his command to advance as rapidlyas possible, until it was within range of the camp. Then Company D fired a volley into the camp and drove the surprised and unpre-pared Indians to the brow of the hills overlooking the plain. Here the warriorsrallied, and turning suddenly made a most desperate effort to repulse the soldiersand retake their camp and abandoned property. Lieutenant Baldwin now brought the cavalry into action and once more forcedthe braves to flee, chasing them hotly for a distance of over twelve miles. The

— 183 — victory was complete and resulted in the capture of the entire Indian camp andthe rescue of the two younger Germaine girls, Adelaide and Julia. It was Chief Gray Beards own camp of Cheyenne Indians, the very same savageswho had perpetrated the outrage upon the wayfaring Germaine family, that hadbeen captured by Baldwin. The rescue of these two little girls was the reward of his quick and decisiveaction. For had he delayed the attack only for a short time, the Indians wouldundoubtedly have murdered their white captives and managed their escape. Freed from the clutches of their tormentors the little girls were boundless intheir joy. They cried and laughed, their eyes beamed with delight; they kissed andhugged their deliverers and knew not how to express their childish gratitude. Those who were present when the children were led away from the camp wherethey had suffered so much will never forget the scene.
