hostiles.The wounded were quickly laid in shelteredplaces within the corral, while the woundedhorses were led to the exposed side of the hud-dled group of men, wagons and horses and shotthere, to form a defense for some of the menwho were acting as sharpshooters.The contents of the wagons were then quickly piled on top of the horses andbehind this meager shelter the troopers kept up their fire; but against one moredeadly from the screeching, half-frantic redskins. Not content with the advantagethey had over the small corral, the wily Indians set fire to the tall grass and sage-brush down the valley. The flames, fanned by the high wind, spread rapidly towardsthe troops, igniting bundles, grain-sacks, wagon-covers and other combustible ma-terial, adding the horrors of fire to the rain of lead and arrows.
