hostiles.The wounded were quickly laid in shelteredplaces within the corral, while the woundedhorses were led to the exposed side of the hud-dled group of men, wagons and horses and shotthere, to form a defense for some of the menwho were acting as sharpshooters.The contents of the wagons were then quickly piled on top of the horses andbehind this meager shelter the troopers kept up their fire; but against one moredeadly from the screeching, half-frantic redskins. Not content with the advantagethey had over the small corral, the wily Indians set fire to the tall grass and sage-brush down the valley. The flames, fanned by the high wind, spread rapidly towardsthe troops, igniting bundles, grain-sacks, wagon-covers and other combustible ma-terial, adding the horrors of fire to the rain of lead and arrows. The entire trainwas threatened with destruction. The troopers, besides being compelled to with- ^ 3^ HENRY JOHNSON, Sergeant, Troop D, 9th U. S. Cavalry.Born June 11, 1850, in Virginia.

The sun was rapidly sinking behindthe mountains and as twilight set in the Indians redoubled their efforts to dislodgethe men, but the troopers took courage in the thought of approaching darkness andfought with renewed vigor, picking off a redskin every time he silhouetted his headand shoulders against the deepening gloam. Thus the fight was kept up from 3oclock in the afternoon until darkness put an end to the desperate struggle. In afinal effort a large party of the reds had charged down upon the corral, firing volleyafter volley into the huddled-up mass of men, horses, wagons and debris.
